COVID19 Updates & Information

Updated June 6, 2020

The last week of school was a busy one with special events in each class and an end of the year drive through parade and food drive. We collected and donated 34 bags of groceries (over 400 items!) to our local food pantry because of our amazing HOMS community. The final months of the 2020-2021 school year were challenging, but we met those challenges together. We are grateful for all of your continued generosity, thoughtfulness and support.

Now it is time to look forward towards the 2020-2021 school year. We will be opening the school building towards the end of August. We are currently reviewing and evaluating the Interim Guidance for Administrators of US K-12 Schools and Child Care Programs provided by the CDC, DESE and EEC. Thankfully, we have nearly 90 days for things to evolve and change for the better. Some of the CDC guidelines for early childhood read “if possible” or “if feasible”. It is important for us to carefully review these guidelines. We will carefully consider what is developmentally appropriate and feasible for the children in our Montessori environment along with any specific health care concerns and be transparent with families about those things.

In April, we ordered 2 hand held electrostatic disinfecting sprayers for the classrooms which should be delivered by October. We have the appropriate quantity of a safe disinfecting solution and have 2 more cumbersome sprayers for the interim. We have a supply of extra non latex gloves and disposable face masks to have on hand if needed by anyone. We have also ordered handheld UV light sanitizing devices. These things are feasible and only add to our already stringent health and disinfecting policies, procedures and protocols. In addition, our normal drop off and pick up policies and procedures already mitigate having anyone other than students and staff in the building. For the time being, any school tours will be made available virtually. In addition, we have been working to secure additional space. These details will be forthcoming as soon as the paperwork is complete.

As you are already aware, every school in the nation was closed and put in a position where distance learning was the only option for the remainder of this school year. The distance learning platform offered by HOMS was significantly more personal and effective than most that were offered by other schools in the area- many of which did not get on board until much later. We are very proud of what the HOMS team accomplished as well as their resilience and dedication to our community of learners. We are aware that the primary and toddler distance learning platform required a level of parent support unlike that of the other programs, but in some ways and for some families, that is what made it really special. The parents and students were able to see and speak with their guides each day. While certainly not our delivery system of choice, We think that this allowed their Montessori experience to continue to be meaningful and intimate even from a distance.

The remote learning platform and systems in place for K through upper el have continued to evolve and improve and have been received very well by most families and students. We will continue to work to improve upon those systems through the summer and will be planning for and improving the already effective primary and and toddler distance learning programs for the fall should we need to go that route for any period of time. We are confident that if we are forced into a situation requiring temporary distance learning again at some point in the next school year, the experience will be a positive one. We invite everyone to review the parent testimonials regarding our response during our mandated COVID19 closure.

We will continue to maintain the most experienced, highly qualified faculty and staff possible for our students and our school in order to effectively support the continued development of all of our students’ mental health, social-emotional growth and learning. We will also continue to maintain the peace and calm here at HOMS, prepare for the coming school year and work to provide a “normal” and healthy environment for our entire community in the fall.

Updated 4/21/20

Hands-On Montessori School is committed to ensuring the safety and health of our community. As of Monday, March 16th, HOMS transitioned into a “Learning From Home” phase. This was a proactive step to do our part to slow the spread of illness, lessening the impact on our healthcare system. As per Governor Charlie Baker’s mandate for social distancing & Stay at home along with continued communication and guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, we will remain closed. We will monitor any updates and promptly communicate any changes to our HOMS community via email.

4/21/20: As coronavirus cases continued to surge in the state, Gov. Charlie Baker announced that schools in Massachusetts will remain closed for the rest of the school year. “All public and private schools will remain closed through the end of the school year. Remote learning will continue in all districts. This does not apply to residential special education schools,” Baker said. The governor said students cannot safely return to school and risk spreading COVID-19 to others.
During this time we understand and respect the need for continued physical distancing. We will continue to work hard to provide our HOMS community with as much opportunity for learning and social connection as possible. Please reach out if you have a question or need any extra help or support. We miss seeing our students each day, but are comforted to know that everyone remains healthy and happy.

A Message from Emily Miller, Head of School:

We are grateful for the continued support of our entire HOMS Community during these unprecedented times. We have always had the social-emotional health and well being of our students as our number one priority. Now more than ever, we are concerned about the physical and mental health of our entire HOMS Community and beyond. We have been working hard to maintain the necessary PHYSICAL DISTANCING while offering plenty of opportunity for SOCIAL CONNECTION and learning for our students. Replicating exactly what happens in our classrooms is not something we can achieve from a distance. That said, we continue to work in collaboration with our families to maintain the integrity of learning that is uniquely Montessori. We aim to provide families with support, resources and activities for a comprehensive learning continuum that corresponds to the developmental needs and characteristics of each individual child while maintaining its roots in Montessori philosophy and pedagogy given our mandated closure and distance regulations. Below you will find Learning from Home handbook that was so generously shared by Arbor Montessori in GA. This document outlines specifics for each program level.

HOMS has been responsible for the teaching, learning and support of our community for nearly 18 years. Together, we will get through this stronger and better than ever. Thank you all for your kind words of support and continued faith in and support of the work that we do. Please stay healthy.

With love and appreciation,

“Miss” Em

Juice Plus+ products are made from the juice powder concentrates and oils from more than 40 different fruits, vegetables and grains. While Juice Plus+ isn’t a substitute for eating fruits and vegetables, our whole food-based products support a healthy diet by offering a much wider variety of naturally occurring vitamins, along with antioxidants and phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables. Every Juice Plus+ product is made from quality ingredients grown farm fresh, providing the natural nutrients your body needs.

The reason I share Juice Plus: Up until our daughter was two, she had consistent ear infections. So often, the doctor became concerned and suggested tubes. A colleague suggested Juice Plus. About 15 years earlier, her daughter’s ear infections cleared while she was taking Juice Plus. We figured…why not? Our daughter started on Juice Plus over four years ago and has never had another ear infection. Coincidence? No one can argue the researched benefits of whole foods and fruits and vegetables. Two years ago, my wife and I started taking them, despite me being vegan and her being vegetarian. I could feel the difference in my body….bouncing back much faster after workouts, reduced joint pain, increased energy level, increased mood. I became so passionate about Juice Plus, I joined the business just over a year ago. Now I’m passionate about the product and the community.
